Austin is a city in the country of United States. Being the capital of the U.S. state of Texas, Austin is the 11th most populous city of the country and the 4th most populous city in the state of Texas. Located in Central Texas, Austin is home to numerous lakes such us Lake Walter E. Long, Barton Springs, McKinney Falls, Lake Travis on the Colorado River and Lady Bird Lake.
In the year 1839 on December 27th Austin was made the capital of Texas, replacing Houston and was incorporated under the name ‘Waterloo’. However, Austin got its name from Stephen F. Austin who was the first secretary of state of the Republic of Texas. Stephen F. Austin was known as the Father of Texas. The University of Texas at Austin and the Texas State Capitol are some of the famous monuments in the city making it the centre for education and government. Austin is a diverse mixture of students, musicians, high-tech workers and government employees. In fact, numerous companies have set up their headquarters or regional offices in Austin. Google, IBM, Intel, Oracle Corporation, Apple Inc, Paypal, Amazon, 3M, eBay, Cisco and General Motors are some of the renowned companies of the world which have set up its headquarters in the city of Austin.
Austin is nicknamed as “Live Musical Capital of the World”, “City of the Violet Crown”, “ATX” and “Silicon Hills”. Austin covers a total area of 305.1 sq mi (790.1 sq km). The total population of the city as of 2010 is 967,629 and the population density is 3,182 per sq mi (1,228.6 per sq km). Council-Manager is the government type in the city with Steve Adler being the mayor and Spencer Cronk being the city manager. The motto of Austin is “Keep Austin Weird”. For the year 2017 and 2018 Austin was named as the number one place to live in the U.S. by the U.S. News & World Report.
