The Ministry of earth sciences (MoES) is the new name of the
Department of ocean development (DoD) which was
transformed in July 1981. This ministry is governed by the
Government of India
and is liable to
provide information related to the weather, climate, ocean, and coastal state.
Formation of ministry
The
government of India created a
Department of Ocean Development (DoD)
and said that it will be included in the part of the cabinet secretariat. The charge of this ministry was directly under the charge of the
Prime minister of India. In
1982 it became a
separate department
and started to carry out its activity in the field of space. Then
in 2006, it was made a
separate ministry
called the ministry of Ocean development
The government of
India in 2006 again renamed it and called it the ministry of earth sciences. And in 2006 the government passed a resolution and
brought out a lot of scientific agencies and institutions under the ambit of this single ministry. The name of those ministries is the Indian Metrological Department, the
Indian Institute of Tropical Metrology, and the national center for medium-range weather forecasting and research. All these agencies are now being governed under the control of the single
ministry called the ministry of earth and sciences.
Functions of the ministry
The ministry of earth and sciences is responsible to provide service for the weather, ocean, climate, and coastal state including hydrology, seismology, and natural hazards. And to evolve the harness of marine living creatures and the resources which are nonliving but sustainably for the country and the research work of the three poles of the earth (the
Arctic, Antarctic, and Himalaya) is also done by the same ministry.
Minister of the ministry of earth and sciences
Dr. Jitendra Singh is holding the ministry since
8 July 2021 and still carrying his post. He is born in
Jammu& Kashmir on 6 November 1956. His qualifications are admired as he is an
MBBS graduate and has done his
Ph.D. from the
Stanley Medical College, Chennai,
Tamil Nadu India. And in
May 2014 he was elected in the
16th Lok Sabha election.
