The Swadeshi movement was a part of the Indian freedom struggle with an aim to remove the British Empire from India and to improve the economic condition of the country. The principle on which the Swadeshi movement was based was to use Indian made products and promote the message of swadeshi. The boycott movement became a part of Swadeshi Movement after the Partition of Bengal in 1905 by the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. The boycott movement is considered as the second Swadeshi movement. Some historians renounce it as the second phase of the Swadeshi movement. In fact, L M Bhole classified the Swadeshi movement into five phases with the first phase starting from 1850 and continuing till 1904. Known as the First Swadeshi Movement, the movement was developed by leaders Bal Gangadhar Tilak, G. V. Joshi, Bhaswat K Nigoni, Mahadev Govind Ranade, Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Dadabhai Naoroji.

The boycott movement started after the partition of Bengal in 1905 and went on to become one of the successful freedom movements. The boycott movement lasted till 1911. The movement was initiated by Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bipin Chandra Pal, V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, Babu Genu and Aurobindo Ghosh. The aim of the boycott movement was to boycott all the goods and products of the British origin. One of the famous examples was the burning of foreign clothes (western clothes). The aim was to use Indian products instead of the foreign products and to encourage the masses to use products that were made in India. This was a form of protest by the Indians to express their anger on the move by the British in partitioning Bengal.
