The first satyagraha held in India was in the year 1812 in the city of Ahmadabad, Gujarat, India. The satyagraha held in the month of December by the Manekchowktraders against the Maratha oppression. The reason for the satyagraha was the anarchic behaviour of the tax collectors. The traders of Manekchowk also protested against the high tax rates during the Maratha rule. It was a peaceful satyagraha where traders protested by shutting down their shops. This peaceful satyagraha was so severe that the British officials from Baroda had to intervene in Ahmadabad to pacify the traders.

Ahmadabad is the largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat. Also known as Amdavad, the city was the former capital of the Indian state of Gujarat. The city is located on the banks of the Sabarmati River and is the fifth most populous city in India. American magazine Forbes ranked Ahmadabad third in its list of fastest growing cities of the decade in the year 2010. Ahmadabad was even chosen as the best city to live in India by The Times of India.
