During the reign of Wodeyars, Srirangapatana was made the capital of the kingdom. The fort was captured by the Marathas in 1757 under the military general Hyder Ali, who served the King Krishnaraja Wodeyar but later he reoccupied the fort.
Tipu Sultan, son of Hyder Ali, took reign of Srirangapatana Fort in 1782 and started building fortification around it. To stop the invading English army. Tipu took the help of the French and with their architects advanced the fort.
On 4th May, 1799 the British forces under the directions of Colonel Arthur Wellesley made a surprise attack on the fort. Tipu Sultan was killed in this battle and the English signed a treaty with the Wodeyar queen.
This fort is secured in the Western and Northern directions by the river Cauveri. In 1799 the famous Lal Mahal and Tipu's Palace, located inside the fort were demolished by the British during their invasions.
