well, this will depend totally on the device you use if you are using a nexus or pixel devices the update will not going to create any problem, but if you are using a phone from a Chinese manufacturer or some of the Samsung phones it will cause some bugs initially.
the smooth performance also depends upon the hardware your phone has(as low ram affects the performance on update).
