Kamaljit Sandhu was the first Indian women to win an Asian Games gold in 400m in the race. She achieved this milestone in the year 1970 at Bangkok Asian Games. She covered the 400m distance in just 57.3 seconds and became the first Indian women to win a gold medal in any Asian Games.
She has also been awarded Padma Shri in the year 1971. In 1971, she was one of the finalists in the World University Games held at Turin, Italy, at 400 meters race.
