When do you say "thanks to" and "thanks for"?

It is a bit confusing for so many people
However, thanks to is generally used when you are thankful to a person who helped some help in some sort of work or took you out from any type of trap.And thanks for is used when you are thankful for something.

When do you say "thanks to" and "thanks for"?

Understand this with an example:
Thanks to smith for helping me throughout in this presentation it wouldn’t have been possible without his guidance.
Jean thanks for helping me throughout in this presentation even you were busy but you took out time for me from you busy schedule that’s really sweet you.

"hope you  understood"
