Basketball is ingrained in the Springfield College culture. James Naismith, a Springfield College instructor and graduate student, developed the game in 1891, and it has since grown into the international sports sensation that it is today.
The year was 1891-1892, and it was winter. A group of restless college students gathered in a gymnasium at Springfield College (then known as the International YMCA Training School) in Springfield, Massachusetts. The young guys were compelled to attend; they were required to partake in indoor activities to burn off the energy that had built up since their football season had ended.
James Naismith, a 31-year-old graduate student, was the instructor for this class.
