How can I use ChatGPT to prepare for a job interview?
1 Answer
ChatGPT can be an excellent interview coach. It can predict likely questions, help you structure strong answers, run mock interviews and give feedback, all at any time and without judgement.
Start with research. Paste the job description and ask: "Based on this job description, what skills and qualities is the employer looking for, and what questions are they likely to ask?" You can also ask for general information about the company's industry, while checking specific company facts on its official website.
Match your experience to the role. Share your resume or a summary of your experience and ask: "Which of my experiences best match this role, and what gaps might the interviewer ask about?" This helps you prepare for difficult questions before they come.
Prepare answers with structure. For behavioural questions such as "Tell me about a time you handled a difficult client," ask ChatGPT to help you organise your real stories using the STAR method: situation, task, action and result. Important: use your own real experiences. Invented stories fall apart under follow-up questions.
Run a mock interview. Try this prompt: "Act as an interviewer for a junior data analyst role at a mid-sized IT company in Pune. Ask me one question at a time. After each answer, give feedback on clarity, content and confidence, then ask the next question." For extra realism, use voice mode and answer out loud.
Practise technical questions. For technical roles, ask for practice questions at the right level, such as SQL queries, coding problems, accounting concepts or domain knowledge. Solve them yourself first, then ask for feedback.
Prepare for common difficult moments:
1. "Tell me about yourself" in under two minutes.
2. Salary expectations and how to discuss them politely.
3. Explaining a career gap or job change honestly.
4. Questions to ask the interviewer at the end.
Improve your communication. If English fluency worries you, practise answers in voice mode and ask for corrections and simpler phrasing.
A few cautions apply. Do not memorise AI-written answers word for word; interviewers notice scripted responses. Never use AI secretly during a live interview, which is dishonest and often detected. And verify any company-specific facts yourself.
Used for practice, ChatGPT helps you walk into the interview prepared, structured and much more confident.
