What is ChatGPT search and how does it work?
1 Answer
ChatGPT search lets ChatGPT look up current information on the internet instead of relying only on what it learned during training. It finds relevant web pages, reads them and gives you an answer with links to the sources.
This solves one of the biggest limitations of AI chatbots. A language model's built-in knowledge stops at its training cutoff, so on its own it does not know today's news, recent results, current prices or new announcements. With search, ChatGPT can answer questions such as "What did RBI announce in its latest policy?" or "What are the reviews saying about the new phone launched this week?"
How does it work? When ChatGPT decides your question needs fresh information, it creates search queries, fetches results from the web and reads the most relevant pages. It then writes an answer combining that information and shows citations, often as small links or a sources panel, so you can open the original pages.
There are two ways search gets used. ChatGPT may search automatically when it judges that your question needs current information. You can also turn on search manually, usually through a search or globe option in the message box or the tools menu, which forces it to look things up.
Here are good uses for ChatGPT search:
1. News and current events.
2. Recent product details, reviews and comparisons.
3. Sports results and schedules.
4. Updates on rules, exams or government announcements.
5. Finding sources and articles on a topic.
6. Local information such as restaurants or events.
To use it well, be specific about time and place: "latest," "this week," "in India" or "in Uttar Pradesh." Ask for official sources when accuracy matters. And open the cited links for important details, because the summary may occasionally misread or oversimplify a page.
There are also limits. Search results depend on what is available and accessible online. Paywalled articles may not be readable. Some websites block AI tools. And like any search, results can include low-quality pages, so judge the sources.
For deeper investigations, ChatGPT also offers deep research, which runs many searches over several minutes and produces a detailed report. For quick facts, regular search is faster.
Search turns ChatGPT from a well-read assistant with outdated knowledge into one that can check what is happening now.
