At first glance, a search engine like Google and an AI chatbot like ChatGPT seem to do the same thing: you type a question and get information. But they work very differently, and knowing the difference helps you choose the right tool.

A search engine finds existing web pages. When you search, it looks through its huge index of websites and shows you a ranked list of pages that match your words. You then click, read and decide for yourself. Its strength is pointing you to original sources, such as official websites, news articles, maps, shops and videos.

An AI chatbot generates an answer. It has learned patterns from enormous amounts of text and writes a direct response in its own words. Its strength is explaining, summarising, writing and having a conversation where you can ask follow-up questions. It can also do things a search engine cannot, like drafting a letter, planning a schedule or rewriting your text.

The two have become closer. Google now shows AI-generated overviews for many searches, and most chatbots can search the web and cite sources. Tools like Perplexity are built around combining both.

Use a search engine when you want:

1. A specific website, such as a government portal or a bank login page.
2. Local results like shops, timings, directions and reviews.
3. Very current information like live scores, train status or stock prices.
4. To see many sources and judge them yourself.
5. Images, videos or shopping options to browse.

Use an AI chatbot when you want:

1. A clear explanation of a concept.
2. Help writing, editing or translating.
3. A summary of a long document you have.
4. To brainstorm, plan or compare options in a conversation.
5. Step-by-step help solving a problem.

There is one important caution. A search engine shows you sources and leaves judgement to you. A chatbot gives a confident, finished answer, which can sometimes be wrong. For facts that matter, use a chatbot with web search turned on and check its sources, or confirm through a search engine.

Many people now use both together: a chatbot to understand and organise a topic, and a search engine to verify details and reach official sources.
