RAG stands for retrieval-augmented generation. It is a method that lets an AI model answer questions using information from your own documents or databases, rather than relying only on what it learned during training.

The problem RAG solves is simple. A language model does not know your company's policies, your product manuals, last week's meeting notes or anything that happened after its training. You could paste documents into every prompt, but that does not work when you have thousands of pages. RAG finds the few most relevant pieces automatically and gives only those to the model.

A typical RAG system works in two phases.

Preparation happens once, ahead of time:
1. Collect your documents, such as PDFs, web pages, FAQs or database records.
2. Split them into smaller chunks, perhaps a few paragraphs each.
3. Convert each chunk into an embedding, a list of numbers that captures its meaning, using an embedding model.
4. Store these embeddings in a vector database or search index.

Answering happens for every question:
1. Convert the user's question into an embedding.
2. Search the database for chunks with similar meaning.
3. Insert the best-matching chunks into the prompt along with the question.
4. Ask the model to answer using that material, ideally citing which chunk each fact came from.

The result is an AI that can answer "What is our refund policy for international orders?" using your actual policy document, and point to where the answer came from.

RAG is popular because it keeps information current, since you only update the documents and do not retrain the model. It reduces hallucinations, makes answers traceable to sources and keeps your data under your control.

Common pitfalls include:

Poor chunking that splits important information across pieces.
Retrieval that finds similar-sounding but wrong passages.
Messy source documents, such as scanned PDFs or complex tables.
Not telling the model to say "I don't know" when the retrieved text lacks the answer.

Many teams combine vector search with traditional keyword search, called hybrid search, and add a re-ranking step to improve accuracy.

RAG is often confused with fine-tuning. Fine-tuning changes how a model behaves or writes. RAG changes what information it can access. For most business question-answering, RAG is the better place to start.
