What should I do when an AI chatbot refuses my request?

Every major AI assistant is trained to decline certain requests, such as instructions for weapons, malware, harassment or content that could hurt people. Most people will never run into these limits for genuinely harmful topics. The frustrating cases are when the AI refuses something that seems perfectly reasonable.

These over-cautious refusals usually happen for a few reasons. The request may contain words that look like a risky topic out of context, such as a nurse asking about medicine overdose thresholds or a security professional asking about how phishing works. The request may be ambiguous, so the model imagines the worst possible reading. Sometimes the request touches copyright, such as asking for full song lyrics or entire chapters of a book, which assistants are designed not to reproduce. And sometimes the model simply makes a mistake.

Here is how to handle a refusal on a legitimate request:

1. Add context. Explain who you are and why you need it. "I'm a school teacher preparing a lesson on online safety; explain the common signs of a phishing email" gives the model the information it needs to help confidently.
2. Be specific about what you want. Vague requests are more likely to be read in a risky way. Clear, narrow requests usually get answered.
3. Reframe toward the actual goal. If you want protection, ask about protection. "How do I secure my small office Wi-Fi?" works better than asking how to break into a network.
4. Ask what it can do. "What part of this can you help with?" often reveals a useful path.
5. Start a fresh chat. If a conversation has gone in an odd direction, a new chat removes the earlier context that may be causing caution.
6. Use the feedback button. Thumbs-down feedback on an unnecessary refusal helps companies improve their models.

What will not work, and should not be tried, is tricking the AI with role-play or so-called jailbreak prompts to get genuinely dangerous information. Those safeguards exist for good reasons, and using such tricks can also break the service's terms.

For copyright-related refusals, ask for a summary, analysis or discussion of the work instead of a reproduction. For professional medical, legal or financial questions, the AI will usually give general information and suggest a professional for decisions that affect you directly.

In most cases, a clear request with honest context is all it takes.
