Why does ChatGPT stop in the middle of a long answer and how do I fix it?
1 Answer
It is frustrating when ChatGPT is halfway through a long article or a block of code and simply stops. Usually there is a clear reason, and the fix is quick.
The most common cause is the output limit. Every model has a maximum amount of text it can produce in a single reply. When you ask for something very long, such as a 3,000-word report or a large program in one go, the model can hit that ceiling and stop mid-sentence. This is not an error. It just ran out of room for that turn.
The second cause is a network or server problem. If your internet connection drops briefly, or the service is under heavy load, the response can freeze or end abruptly. You may see an error message, a spinning icon or text that just stops without explanation.
The third cause is the browser or app itself. Too many open tabs, an outdated app version or a browser extension that interferes with the page can stop the text from displaying fully, even if it was generated.
Here are fixes that work:
1. Type "continue" or "please continue from where you stopped." The model will usually pick up from the last line. For code, say "continue the code from the last complete function" so it does not repeat or break the syntax.
2. Break big tasks into parts. Ask for an outline first, then request each section separately. You will also get better quality, because the model focuses on one part at a time.
3. Use the regenerate option if the reply ended because of an error rather than length.
4. Refresh the page or restart the app, and check that you are on a stable connection.
5. Update the app, or try a different browser or a private window to rule out extensions.
6. Check the service status page if many people seem to be having trouble at the same time.
For very long documents, a workflow that saves time is to ask ChatGPT to number the sections in the outline, then say "write section 3 now." You keep control of the structure, and you never lose a whole response to a cut-off.
If it keeps stopping even on short answers, sign out and back in, or clear the site's cache. Persistent problems on a short reply usually point to the connection or the browser rather than ChatGPT itself.
