For a history or UPSC discussion, how should we understand the connection between British land revenue systems and rural inequality in India? The Permanent Settlement, Ryotwari, and Mahalwari systems are often taught as distinct policies, but I’m trying to see how their effects on cultivators and landholding patterns compare.
Did these systems mainly intensify existing inequalities, or did they create new ones that continued after independence? Pointers to useful regional examples would be welcome.
