With thousands of satellites planned for low Earth orbit, I’m wondering how researchers estimate the long-term collision risk. Is the main concern a single major collision creating a chain reaction, or the steady accumulation of smaller debris that makes routine launches and operations harder?
I’d also be interested in how much current avoidance systems and satellite deorbit plans can realistically reduce that risk.
