Why Do Pulse Oximeter Readings Differ Between Fingers?

My fingertip pulse oximeter sometimes gives readings a few percentage points apart when I move it from one finger to another, even within the same minute. I’ve also noticed the result can vary if my hands are cold.

How much variation is normal with a home device, and what should I check before trusting a reading? I’m especially curious whether finger choice, fit, or movement can affect the number.
