What Makes a Strong UPSC Mains Answer Different from a Well-Read Essay?

I can read widely on a topic and explain it at length, but I’m not sure that translates into a good answer under UPSC Mains time limits. Sometimes my responses feel like shortened essays rather than answers to the exact question.

How do experienced candidates decide what to include and what to leave out? I’m especially interested in how you interpret command words such as “analyse” or “critically examine” and build a clear UPSC Mains answer structure without spending too long on the introduction.
