Can Internal Links Help Google Discover a New Page Faster?

I’ve published a new page on an established site and submitted it for indexing, but it still hasn’t appeared in search. The page is linked from one older article, though I’m not sure whether that’s enough for Google to find and understand it promptly.

How much difference do internal links make for new pages in search? Is it mainly about helping crawlers discover the URL, or do the relevance and placement of those links matter too?
