Why Do Bananas Ripen Faster When They’re Kept Beside Apples?

Bananas seem to soften and develop brown spots sooner when I leave them in a fruit bowl with apples. Is that because apples release a ripening gas, or could warmth and airflow in the bowl be responsible as well?

I’d like to know how much separating the fruit actually helps, and whether the effect changes when the bananas are already ripe. If the same principle applies to other fruits, which pairings are worth keeping apart?
