The 1857 uprising against Company rule is often described as a major revolt across northern and central India, but its reach was far from uniform. Some places saw intense fighting, while other regions remained comparatively quiet or supported the British.
How much of that uneven spread came down to local rulers and military units, and how much to communication, geography, or differing political interests? I’m interested in explanations that compare regions rather than treating the revolt as one coordinated movement.
