Why Can a Pulse Oximeter Give Different Readings on Different Fingers?

My fingertip pulse oximeter sometimes gives noticeably different oxygen readings when I move it from one finger to another, even within a minute or two. The number can also jump around if my hands are cold or I’m moving.

How much variation is normal for a home reading, and what conditions can make the result less reliable? I’m trying to understand what to check before deciding whether a reading is worth following up.
