I’ve noticed that many hybrid cars show energy flowing back to the battery when the driver slows down. Since braking normally turns motion into heat, how does regenerative braking recover some of that energy?
Does it work differently from ordinary braking, and are there situations—such as a full battery or a sudden stop—where the car relies more on its conventional brakes?
