Why Can an AI Sound Certain When Its Sources Disagree?

I’ve seen AI answers present a very definite conclusion even when the sources behind it seem to contradict one another. The answer may quote a reliable page, but skip over a second source that points the other way.

How do language models handle conflicting source material? Is the confident tone a sign that the model has weighed the evidence, or can it simply reflect how the answer was phrased? I’m interested in how people check these answers when the disagreement matters.
