Why Can an A1C Result and a Fasting Glucose Test Tell Different Stories?

How can someone get a fasting glucose result that looks reassuring but an A1C result that raises concern, or the other way around? Since both tests relate to blood sugar, I expected them to line up more closely.

What time period does each test reflect, and can factors such as illness, anemia, or recent changes in routine affect the comparison? I’m asking about the difference between A1C and fasting glucose in general, not trying to interpret a particular person’s results.
