The GI Bill is often described as a major reason many U.S. veterans went to college or bought homes after World War II. But how evenly did those opportunities reach veterans in practice?
I’m interested in the gap between the benefits written into the law and what people could actually use. For example, how did local banks, colleges, and administrators affect access for Black veterans, especially in places where segregation shaped everyday decisions? When discussing the GI Bill benefits, how much weight should we give the law itself versus the institutions that delivered them?
