I’ve heard people describe offside as being “ahead of the ball,” which makes me wonder about a backward pass. If a player is beyond the last defender when a teammate passes the ball backward, can that player still be penalized for offside?
Is the rule based mainly on where the receiver is standing when the ball is played, or does the direction of the pass change the call? I’m looking for a clear explanation of how those details are judged during a match.
