Why Do Satellite Images Show Different Ocean Colors?

I compared satellite views of the same stretch of ocean from two mapping services, taken around the same time, and the water looked noticeably different in color. One image showed deep blue; the other had greenish patches near the coast.

How much of that difference comes from real changes in the water—such as sediment or algae—and how much comes from the satellite sensor, image processing, or the way the map provider displays it?
