Are Smartwatch HRV Readings Useful for Tracking Health?

My smartwatch records heart rate variability (HRV), and the number moves around a lot from day to day. I understand that sleep, stress, exercise, and even how the watch fits can affect the reading, but I’m unsure what the trend is actually telling me.

How useful are heart rate variability readings from consumer watches for noticing changes in recovery or general wellbeing? I’m not looking for a diagnosis—just a clearer sense of what these measurements can and can’t reasonably tell an ordinary user.
