Why Do Tomatoes Split After a Heavy Rain?

Several tomatoes in my garden developed deep cracks after a heavy rain, even though they looked fine the day before. It seems to happen most often when the fruit is nearly ripe.

Is the sudden change in water the main factor, or do variety and growing conditions matter too? I’d also like to know whether split tomatoes are still usable and what gardeners do to reduce the problem without picking all the fruit early.
