What Makes a UPSC History Answer Analytical Rather Than Chronological?

When I write history answers for UPSC, I can usually recall the events and put them in the right order. But some questions seem to expect more than a timeline: they ask about causes, consequences, competing interpretations, or how one development changed another.

How do you decide which details belong in an analytical answer instead of simply retelling what happened? I’m especially interested in how to build a clear argument without losing the historical sequence or adding claims that the question never asked for. What separates strong UPSC history answers from a well-organized summary?
