I understand that light from very distant galaxies can be stretched as the universe expands, but I’m not clear on why that makes infrared observations so useful. Does the shift mean the galaxy’s light originally came from a different part of the spectrum?
When astronomers combine infrared images with visible-light observations, what extra information are they hoping to learn about a galaxy’s stars, dust, or age?
