Why Do Cut Apples Turn Brown, and Does Lemon Juice Slow It Down?

When I slice an apple for a lunchbox, the exposed surface starts turning brown before lunchtime. The apple still seems fine to eat, but it looks less appealing.

What’s happening when cut apple browning begins, and does a little lemon juice genuinely slow it down? I’ve also heard that water or an airtight container helps, but I’m not sure which method works best without changing the apple’s taste.
