Why do strawberries spoil in the fridge while they still look fine?

I’ve had strawberries develop soft spots or mold after a few days in the fridge, even when most of the berries still look perfectly good. I usually leave them unwashed until I’m ready to eat them, but storage time seems to vary a lot from one batch to another.

What conditions make berries spoil faster in a sealed container in the fridge? And when a few in the pack have gone bad, is there a reliable way to judge whether the rest are still okay to eat?
