I’m putting together briefs for freelance writers and keep going back and forth between two extremes: giving them a loose topic and letting them shape the piece, or specifying the angle, structure, sources, and even key points in detail.
Too little direction can lead to a draft that misses the audience. Too much can make the writing feel stiff and leave no room for a useful idea the writer brings to the assignment.
Where do you draw the line? What details belong in a content brief, and what should be left to the writer’s judgment?
