Can a Smartwatch Detect Atrial Fibrillation If I Only Wear It During Workouts?

My smartwatch offers irregular-rhythm notifications, but I usually wear it only while exercising. If an episode of atrial fibrillation happened at another time, would the watch be able to detect it later, or does it need to be worn regularly to record useful readings?

I’d also like to understand what these notifications can—and cannot—tell someone. Does a normal result mean anything if the watch was off for most of the day? I’m asking about how wearable monitoring works, not looking to use a watch reading as a diagnosis.
