My Windows 11 laptop installed a manufacturer BIOS update and now starts at a BitLocker recovery screen. I did not change my password or deliberately turn on drive encryption, so I am unsure what triggered it.
The screen shows a recovery key ID and asks for a 48-digit key. I can sign in to my Microsoft account from another device, but I do not know how to identify the right key if more than one is listed.
- Can a BIOS update trigger this even when the drive itself is working normally?
- Does the recovery key ID identify which saved key belongs to this laptop?
- If the laptop was previously connected to a work account, could the recovery key be stored with that organisation instead?
I want to understand the safe steps for BitLocker recovery after a BIOS update before changing firmware settings or reinstalling Windows. There are files on the laptop that I have not backed up.
