While revising modern Indian history for UPSC, I keep seeing India described as both an independent country from 15 August 1947 and a dominion until 26 January 1950.
I am trying to separate India's dominion status after independence from its earlier position under British rule. The continued presence of a governor-general and the British monarch as head of state makes the terminology confusing.
Which powers actually remained outside India?
Could the British Parliament still legislate for India without India's consent during this period? Could the monarch or the British government overrule decisions made by Indian ministers?
For an exam answer, I would like a precise distinction between becoming independent and becoming a republic. Which changes in 1950 concerned sovereignty, and which concerned the constitutional form of the Indian state?
