I’m testing Claude for a document-review workflow. When I paste the same passage and question into the chat app and an API request, the app gives a more detailed response and catches issues that the API response sometimes misses.
I’ve selected what appears to be the same model family, but I’m not sure that makes the two setups equivalent.
What should I control before comparing them?
- Whether the displayed model name corresponds to the same underlying model version.
- Conversation history, project instructions, and any system instructions.
- Access to tools, thinking settings, and output limits.
- Differences between uploading a document and sending its text directly.
For now, I’m using short passages pasted as text so that file extraction is not another variable. I also understand that repeated generations can differ.
What would a fair Claude API comparison look like? I want to separate ordinary variation from differences in the surrounding product setup, rather than assume the chat app has a more capable model.
