A medicine leaflet says to avoid grapefruit, but I’m unclear about whether the warning concerns eating it near the time of a dose or avoiding it throughout treatment.
Does an eight- or twelve-hour gap change the risk of grapefruit and medication interactions? Is the warning generally the same for whole grapefruit and grapefruit juice, or does that depend on the particular medicine?
I’m asking about the general mechanism, not for clearance to combine them. I’ll follow the leaflet and check the exact medicine with a pharmacist before changing what I eat. I’d like to understand why timing advice for grapefruit may differ from advice about taking medicine with an ordinary meal.
