Why Does My USB-C Monitor Charge My Phone but Show No Picture?

I connected my Android phone to a USB-C monitor using the cable that works with my laptop. The phone charges, but the monitor says there is no video signal. The same monitor and cable display the laptop’s screen without any trouble.

I assumed a USB-C port could handle charging and an external display, but the phone’s specifications only mention its USB version and charging speed.

  • Does the phone need to explicitly support DisplayPort Alt Mode, or is there another specification I should check?
  • Can a different adapter help if the phone does not support wired video output?
  • How can I distinguish a compatibility limitation from a cable or monitor setting problem?

I’m trying to work out whether this setup can support wired screen mirroring before buying more adapters.
