I am reviewing SEO for a small shoe store. The main running-shoes category has filters for size, colour, and features such as waterproofing. At the moment, every filtered URL points its canonical tag back to the unfiltered category.
That seems reasonable for a temporary size selection, but “waterproof running shoes” feels like a search someone would actually make. We have enough products to make that filtered page useful, although its availability changes with stock.
Where should the distinction be?
For faceted navigation SEO, how do you decide which filter combinations deserve indexable landing pages and which should remain shopping controls only?
I would also like to understand how canonical tags, internal links, and XML sitemaps should agree with that decision. Does adding a unique heading and description meaningfully change the assessment, or should product selection and search demand carry more weight?
