Why Do Some Vaccines Need Booster Doses While Others Don’t?

Some vaccines are given as a single dose or a short series, while others have boosters scheduled years later. Is that mainly because immunity fades at different rates, or do the type of germ, the vaccine design, and a person’s age also affect the schedule?

I’m interested in the general reasoning behind booster doses, rather than advice about any one vaccine or an individual medical decision.
