On a straight, a car can look close enough to attack, then seem to struggle through the corners once it gets tucked behind another car. Why does following another car closely affect a Formula 1 car so much, even when the driver is still on the racing line?
I’d like to understand what the disturbed airflow does to grip and why the effect seems more noticeable in some corners than others. Does the current ground-effect design reduce dirty air in Formula 1, or has it mainly changed where and how the problem shows up?
