Why Does a Tennis Ball Bounce Differently on Clay and Hard Courts?

A shot that stays low on one tennis court can kick up much higher on another. I know court surface is part of the reason, but I’m not sure how much comes from the surface itself versus the ball slowing down or gripping differently after it lands.

What makes the bounce on clay and hard courts feel so distinct to players? Does the surface change the ball’s speed, height, or direction most, and how much do moisture and court condition affect the comparison?
