Why Did India Choose a Parliamentary System After Independence?

India’s Constitution established a parliamentary system, with a prime minister and cabinet responsible to the elected legislature. I’m interested in the historical reasoning behind that choice, especially since the country was building democratic institutions after colonial rule and amid enormous political and social change.

How much did familiarity with British parliamentary government matter, and how much did the Constituent Assembly’s debates point toward other priorities? I’d like to understand the arguments that shaped the decision, rather than treat the system as an automatic inheritance.
