Why Does Every U.S. State Get Two Senators Regardless of Population?

Why did the U.S. Constitution give every state two seats in the Senate, even though states differ so much in population? The arrangement can make a voter in a small state have more influence over Senate representation than a voter in a large one.

Was equal state representation mainly a compromise during the Constitutional Convention, or were there other concerns behind the design? I’d be interested in how that decision was debated and why it has stayed in place.
