I’m trying to understand the New Deal beyond the list of programs created during the Great Depression. How did it change what Americans expected the federal government to do, and which parts of that change lasted after the emergency ended?
I’m especially interested in the difference between immediate relief measures and longer-term changes to regulation, social support, and the relationship between Washington and the states. Historians sometimes describe this period as a turning point, but I’d like to know what changed in practice and what remained contested.
