Why Does an EV’s Charging Speed Slow Down Near 80%?

On a road trip, my electric car charges quickly at a DC fast charger at first, then the displayed power drops noticeably as the battery gets closer to 80%. The charger and car both seem to be working normally.

Is that slowdown mainly about protecting the battery, or do temperature and the charger’s power limits play a similar role? I’d also like to know whether the 80% mark is a useful rule of thumb across different EV models, or just a rough estimate.
